  19. 1) INTRODUCTION
  20.    ============

  22. Welcome to the Trumpet Winsock!
  23.  
  24. The Trumpet Winsock is a compact program that helps connect your computer
  25.  to the Internet.  It allows programs (such as Netscape and Eudora) to talk to 
  26. other programs (such as a Web or Postoffice server... maybe in another 
  27. country) over the Internet.
  28.  
  29. When a Winsock application (such as Netscape or Eudora) needs to connect 
  30. to the Internet it will look for a Winsock on your computer.  If it is 
  31. installed and configured correctly, then the Trumpet Winsock will start (and 
  32. automatically dial into your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  33.  
  34. Trumpet Winsock simplifies the process of connecting your computer to
  35. the Internet.  Although installing Trumpet Winsock may be a little 
  36. complicated, you only need to do it once.  
  37.  
  38. To complement the Trumpet Winsock we have included several diagnostic Winsock 
  39. applications (Ping, Hop, Dig and TCP Meter).  These applications are 
  40. documented in the Winsock's Help file.

  46. Trumpet Winsock Help contains lots of handy information about configuring the 
  47. Trumpet Winsock and contacting Trumpet Software.  The Help file can be 
  48. accessed directly from Windows or by selecting Contents from the Help menu in 
  49. the Winsock.

  58. 3) INSTALLING THE TRUMPET WINSOCK FOR THE FIRST TIME

  61. If you are using the Trumpet Winsock to dial into an Internet Provider then 
  62. please work through the SLIP/PPP CHECKLIST.

  64. If you are not using a modem, and instead need to use the Winsock over a 
  65. network (such as Ethernet or Token Ring) then please work through the PACKET 
  66. DRIVER CHECKLIST.

  68. These checklists are intended to help you install the Trumpet Winsock quickly 
  69. and easily.  If you encounter any difficulties, make sure you've read through 
  70. the relevant sections of the Help file.

  160. 4) UPGRADING TO VERSION 3.0
  161.    ========================

  163. Upgrading from a correctly configured Trumpet Winsock should normally be quite 
  164. an easy process.  However there are two areas that may cause some 
  165. difficulties...
  166.  
  167. a) Updating your registration password
  168.  
  169. If you are upgrading from a registered version of the Trumpet Winsock earlier 
  170. than 3.0 (eg 2.0A or 2.1F to 3.0) then you will need to update your 
  171. registration password.  This will not be necessary if you are upgrading from a 
  172. minor revision (eg 3.0C to 3.0D)
  173.  
  174. To automatically update your registration password over the Internet, use the 
  175. "update registration" feature as follows:
  176.  
  177.   1. Either..
  178.   Install Version 3.0 over a previously registered Trumpet Winsock.
  179.      Or..
  180.   Copy the trumpwsk.ini file from a previous registered Trumpet Winsock into 
  181.   the same directory as Trumpet Winsock 3.0.
  182.  
  183.   2. Start the Trumpet Winsock Version 3.0 (and dial into you provider if 
  184.      applicable).

  186.   3. Select Update registration from the Special menu.
  187.  
  188. If you receive a "registration name not found" error message, then please 
  189. contact our Registrations Department with details of how and when you 
  190. originally registered.

  193. b) Upgrading login scripts (only applies to dial-up SLIP/PPP users)
  194.  
  195. If your login and bye scripts have been configured correctly and work fine 
  196. with an earlier version of the Winsock, they should still work fine under the 
  197. new version.  (The only exception to this may be if your script logs in but 
  198. returns "script aborted". 
  199.  
  200. If you are really keen to try then make sure you back up your originals first 
  201. and then work through the SLIP/PPP CHECKLIST above.

  204. 5) TROUBLE SHOOTING

  212. Winsock, please check these lists.  You could even try using the Help file's 
  213. Search facility to look for a topic or question.

  215. If you can't find the answers you're looking for, then please contact us (our

  235.   Has the problem only started since upgrading to Version 3.0?

  237.   What version of the Trumpet Winsock are you upgrading *from*?

  239. Are other Winsocks or TCP/IP stacks (eg Microsoft's DUN) installed?

  244. b) If over a modem;

  246.   Have you read "Using the Trumpet Winsock over SLIP/PPP" in the Help file?
  247.   Have you worked through the SLIP/PPP CHECKLIST?
  248.   SLIP, CSLIP, or PPP?
  249.   If PPP, then is PAP or CHAP used?:
  250.   Are you logging in manually or automatically?
  251.   If automatically;
  252.     Does your login.cmd return "script completed" or "script aborted"?

  260.   Have you worked through the PACKET DRIVER CHECKLIST?
  261.   What kind of network driver (eg NDIS, ODI, packet driver)?
  262.   Is winpkt or ndis3pkt being used?
  263.   Is winpkt (or ndis3pkt) loading correctly?

  266. 6) WHAT DOES THE INSTALLER DO?
  267.    ===========================
  268.  
  269. i) The installer starts by searching for additional Winsocks and offers to 
  270. rename any that it finds (eg winsock.dll and wsock32.dll).  In a 3.1
  271. or 3.11 environment any wsock32.dll files will NOT be renamed to protect WIN32s
  272. applications.
  273.  
  274. ii) Then the installer suggests a directory into which the Trumpet 
  275. Winsock and Winsock Applications will be installed. 
  276.  
  277. To avoid multiple installations of the Trumpet Winsock, it searches for a 
  278. directory containing tcpman.exe and suggests that.  
  279.  
  280. iii) If the directory you have okayed contains any setup files (ini files and 
  281. scripts), it will ask you if you would like to retain them.  
  282.  
  283. iv) It then copies across only the files that have date stamps later than 
  284. those in the destination directory.  This is to avoid reverting to an earlier 
  285. version accidentally.  
  286.  
  287. If you wish to copy across all the files regardless, you will need to run the 
  288. installer again and select a new directory.  
  289.  
  290. v) Program Items are created for each of the applications and utilities 
  291. installed. 
  292.  
  293. vi) A modification to the path statement of your autoexec.bat file is 
  294. suggested.  You may choose whether or not to save the new version of 
  295. autoexec.bat. 
  296.  
  297. This modification allows other applications to "demand load" the Winsock.  
  298. This means that other applications can load up the Winsock they need it.  For 
  299. example, the Newsreader when it sends and receives email. 
  300.  
  301. vii) Finally, the machine is restarted if autoexec.bat has been modified.
